SPIRE - NHS Scotland is improving the way it uses information from GP patient records. SPIRE is a service that will allow small amounts of information from GP practice records to be used to help doctors’ surgeries, NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government to improve care and plan services, and to help researchers to learn more from patient information held at GP practices.

Patients across Scotland have been informed of the benefits of the service, and the confidential and secure way in which GP patient records will be used to help plan and improve health care services.

You have a choice about your patient record being used in this way. To find out more go to spire.scot

If you are ill while away from home or if you are not registered with a doctor but need to see one you can receive emergency treatment from a local GP practice.

You can be registered as a temporary patient for up to three months. This will allow you to be seen on a temporary basis and still remain a patient of your permanent GP practice. After three months you will have to permanently register with the practice.

To register as a temporary patient simply contact the local practice you wish to use. Practices do not have to accept you as a temporary patient although they do have an obligation to offer emergency treatment. You cannot register as a temporary patient at a practice in the town or area where you are already registered.
